The Problem: South Africa's Tyre Waste Crisis

South Africa faces a growing backlog of waste tyres that pose serious environmental, health, and safety risks to communities.

An estimated 900,000 tonnes of waste tyres have accumulated in South Africa, with 11 million waste tyres generated every year. Many of these tyres end up in illegal dumps, wetlands, river systems, and informal settlements.

Abandoned tyre stockpiles create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases such as malaria. They also present extreme fire hazards that can burn for days, releasing toxic smoke and contaminating soil and groundwater.

Without a scalable, circular-economy solution, tyre waste will continue to place pressure on already strained municipal waste systems and environmental authorities.

Our Solution: Tyre Recycling & Rubber Brick Manufacturing

Rubber Refectory operates a comprehensive tyre-to-brick process that converts end-of-life tyres into engineered rubber bricks and barrier systems for security, flood defense, crash protection, and sound insulation.

  • Tyre shredding and granulation converts waste tyres into rubber crumb and derived products.
  • Polyurethane-based bonding forms dense, fire-retardant rubber bricks.
  • Modular product systems such as SmartEnforcer and StormEnforcer support fast, scalable deployments.
  • Recovered steel and textiles are returned to the circular economy as secondary raw materials.

Our facility will create jobs, reduce illegal dumping, and deliver resilient infrastructure solutions built from South Africa's tyre waste.

Products Overview

Rubber bricks from Rubber Refectory form the foundation of a family of SmartEnforcer and StormEnforcer systems for security, flood defense, sound insulation, and crash protection.

SmartEnforcer – Security Barriers

Modular security walls up to 2.2 m high with anti-climb surfaces, fire-retardant properties, and impact-resistant mass, ideal for perimeter security and high-risk infrastructure.

Environmental Impact

Rubber Refectory directly addresses South Africa's tyre waste crisis through circular-economy innovation.

By diverting waste tyres from illegal dumps and uncontrolled stockpiles, Rubber Refectory reduces the risk of toxic fires, soil contamination, and polluted waterways. Each brick locks waste rubber into safe, long-life structures.

Recycling tyres into engineered products significantly reduces the lifecycle carbon footprint compared to traditional concrete or steel-only solutions, supporting South Africa's climate commitments.

Our operations align with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations and the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, providing compliant pathways for tyre producers and waste managers.

Social Impact & Job Creation

Rubber Refectory is designed to create 60 direct jobs at the facility and support 200+ indirect jobs through tyre collection, logistics, and associated services.

Community-based tyre collection programmes, including "Tyre Wambles" initiatives, help remove dumped tyres from neighbourhoods while providing new income opportunities to local collectors and cooperatives.

In the Western Cape alone, malaria remains a health concern, with 253 cases reported in 2022–2023. Tyre dumps create standing water and sheltered habitats that allow mosquito populations to grow.

By removing waste tyres from the environment and processing them into bricks, Rubber Refectory supports public health outcomes, particularly in vulnerable communities near illegal dumps.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Rubber Refectory supports South Africa's progress towards multiple UN SDGs through circular-economy innovation, job creation, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

SDG 3
Good Health & Well-Being

Reduces disease risks linked to mosquito breeding in tyre dumps and air pollution from tyre fires.

SDG 8
Decent Work & Economic Growth

Creates direct factory jobs and indirect livelihoods through tyre collection and logistics.

SDG 9
Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure

Deploys innovative tyre-to-brick technology for resilient, low-maintenance infrastructure.

SDG 11
Sustainable Cities & Communities

Supports safer, cleaner, and more resilient urban and peri-urban environments.

SDG 12
Responsible Consumption & Production

Keeps tyres in the circular economy instead of landfills and illegal dumps.

SDG 13
Climate Action

Reduces emissions by avoiding tyre burning and enabling low-carbon infrastructure solutions.
